I just wrapped up a vibrant new series of acrylic paintings celebrating three iconic cacti from the Sonoran Desert: the saguaro, prickly pear, and agave. Each piece bursts with bold color and unexpected neon accents, transforming these familiar desert dwellers into something otherworldly and electric.
The process behind this series was as much about texture as it was about color. I began by applying modeling paste to build a dimensional base—giving each cactus the illusion of physically breaking off the canvas. The sculptural surface adds a tactile energy that draws the viewer in.
From there, I outlined each plant using a cel-shading graffiti style, incorporating bold lines, layers, and depth. The style was influenced by both street art and animation—giving the work a sense of movement and graphic punch.
To finish, I poured resin over the pieces. The resin not only protects the surface but also amplifies the colors and creates a glossy, almost glowing effect. Under light, they shimmer and pop in a way that feels alive—like the desert at sunset after a monsoon storm.
These plants have such a commanding presence in the Southwest. I wanted to capture their beauty, strength, and resilience—but do it in a way that feels fresh, energetic, and a little unexpected.
I’m so excited to share them with you.
