Wild River: A Watercolor Tribute to the Lower Salt River's Untamed Beauty

Stefanie Carson

Watercolor and Ink on Watercolor Paper / 16x20 Framed / $400 for the Pair

Just on the outer edges of Metro Phoenix lies one of Arizona’s most peaceful and awe-inspiring escapes—the Lower Salt River. It's here, among the flowing waters and desert brush, that you’ll often find two of the region’s most iconic wild residents: the big horned sheep and the wild mustang.

This two-piece watercolor series was inspired by those quiet river moments when these animals emerge from the landscape—majestic, free, and completely at ease in their natural habitat. If you’ve ever kayaked the Salt in the late afternoon, you know the magic I’m talking about. There's a hush that settles as the sun starts to dip, and suddenly you spot them—grazing near the water’s edge, unbothered and breathtaking.

Each piece is painted with soft, earthy watercolor tones to reflect the desert environment and the gentle rhythm of river life. I aimed to capture not just the likeness of these animals, but the essence of seeing them in the wild—raw, powerful, and beautifully uncontained.

16x20 framed originals serve as a tribute to the untamed spirit of Arizona’s desert wildlife and the sacred spaces they call home.
